At Walmart, we believe being a profitable and efficient business goes hand-in-hand with being a good steward of the environment. In an effort to reach our goal of being supplied by 100 percent renewable energy, we are finding more ways to implement and utilize renewable energy sources in our stores, Sam’s Club locations and distribution centers. In May 2007, Walmart announced a major purchase of solar power from three solar power providers, BP Solar, SunEdison LLC, and PowerLight, a subsidiary of SunPower Corporation, for Walmart stores, Sam’s Clubs and distribution centers in Hawaii and California. Part of a pilot project was to determine solar power viability for Walmart. We have successfully completed 20 of those installations. In 2008, these systems produced more than 7 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean, renewable energy. Many of these systems came online during the last year and we expect a full year’s production from all of these systems to reach 16 to 18 million kWh, and could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by an estimated 6,000 to 8,000 metric tons per year. In April 2009, Walmart announced it had entered a joint solar development agreement with BP Solar to install solar panels on an additional 10 to 20 Walmart facilities in California by 2011. The expansion is expected to generate 8 million to 16 million kWh of renewable power each year and reduce more than 10,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emission annually*. These reductions are equivalent to: • CO2 emissions from 1.2 million gallons of gasoline consumed* • CO2 emissions from more than 24,160 barrels of oil consumed* • CO2 emissions from more than 432,000 propane cylinders used for home barbeques* • Carbon sequestered annually by more than 2,300 acres of pine or fir forests* • Greenhouse gas emissions avoided by recycling more than 3,000 tons of waste instead of sending it to the landfill * This project is expected to create about 130 jobs, including engineering, design, and installer technician jobs.
