Using Gradients, Blends, and Patterns

You can fill an object or type with a pattern, or objects with a gradient, much the way you apply a color. You can also smoothly flow multiple colors in multiple directions within an object, using the gradient mesh tool. Mesh objects can be manipulated for very detailed shifts in color. Tutorial: connect two circles with tangents

Draw a horizontal guide and 2 circles upon. Activate preview, smart guides and snap to point. Draw a long line with the pentool, its starting point has to be the midpoint of the bigger circle. Rotate the line around the midpoint of the bigger circle until it snaps the midpoint of the smaller one. The line should intersect the guide now.
