Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability

T he Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) performs technology research, development, and demonstration in partnership with U.S. industry and universities in support of DOE’s Office of Electricity Delivery & Energy Reliability (OE), with the goal of modernizing the electric grid to meet the nations’s need for reliable, electric power, enhancing security and reliability of the energy infrastructure, and facilitating recovery (more…)

Global Energy Challenges

Good afternoon. Buenas tardes. I am delighted to be here today to address this distinguished group. This is my first visit to Madrid since I was named Executive Director of the International Energy Agency (IEA) last year. I would like to thank Senor Martinez Martin for inviting me on behalf of the Spanish Energy Club. I would also like to give credit to my friend and colleague in Paris, Luis Echavarri, (more…)

Biomechanical Energy Harvesting: Generating Electricity During Walking with Minimal User Effort

We have developed a biomechanical energy harvester that generates electricity during human walking with little extra effort. Unlike conventional human-powered generators that use positive muscle work, our technology assists muscles in performing negative work, analogous to regenerative braking in hybrid cars, where energy normally dissipated during braking drivesa generator instead. The energy harvester mounts (more…)

Electricity Generated from Renewable Energy in Western Australia An estimated 26,411GWh of electricity was generated in Western Australia in 2005/06, most of which came from natural gas and coal energy sources. Renewable energy accounts for around 3.2% of the State’s electricity generation, nearly half of which is produced from wind power. Shares in Western Australian Electricity Generation (more…)

The Cost of Generating Electricity

In order to make sensible decisions about energy policy for the UK, policy makers need to be able to compare the costs and benefits of different types of electricity generating technologies on a like for like basis. Unfortunately, the UK electricity market is complex. The relationship between the cost of generating electrical power from various sources and the price that consumers pay is blurred by direct and indirect subsidies, market mechanisms, transmission and distribution costs. The true costs of generating electrical power are often obscured (more…)

EP Study

Normally, electricity flows throughout the heart in a regular, measured pattern. This electrical system brings about heart muscle contractions. A problem anywhere along the electrical pathway causes an arrhythmia, or heart rhythm disturbance. By accurately diagnosing the precise cause of an arrhythmia, it is possible to select the best possible treatment. Why an EP study While electrocardiograms (ECGs) are important tests (more…)

TIPS FOR THE SAFE OUTDOOR USE OF ELECTRICITY

Most of us think that we know enough about electricity to stay safe. After all, we are surrounded by it and use it everyday. However, each year hundreds of people die, thousands are injured and millions of dollars in property damage are caused by electrical hazards that could have been avoided. Whether you are just headed out to do a little work in the yard or are off to take on more ambitious outdoor projects, following these (more…)
