CANCER PREVENTION & EARLY DETECTION
This American Cancer Society publication, Cancer Prevention & Early Detection Facts & Figures 2000 (formerly known as the Cancer Risk Report: Prevention and Control ), provides the most current data on tobacco use, nutrition, physical activity, obesity, and cancer screening for the nation, the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and selected cities. Prevention through smoking cessation, better nutrition, and increased physical activity as well as early detection though cancer screening examinations are two of the most important and effective strategies for reaching the ACS goals of saving lives lost from cancer, diminishing suffering due to cancer, and eliminating cancer as a major health problem. While progress toward eliminating cancer as a major health problem is ultimately measured as a reduction in cancer incidence and mortality, such changes usually are not evident until years after programs for cancer prevention or early diagnosis are instituted. The patterns of cancer occurrence we observe today reflect the effects of cancer prevention programs that began years ago. In measuring progress toward preventing cancer, it is desirable not only to follow cancer disease rates but also to track current patterns of preventable risk factors and to assess the impact of programs aimed at changing behaviors or at improving opportunities for early cancer diagnosis and treatment. This report, in conjunction with the annual Cancer Facts & Figures, provides the information needed to track the preventable risk factors and screening examinations that affect cancer incidence, mortality, and survival. In addition to a new title and cover design, other new features in this report include tables which track ACS Mission 2000 goals and Healthy People 2000 goals, adult tobacco trends by racial and ethnic groups, adult obesity using the new federal definitions, and fecal occult blood test data for colon and rectum cancer screening. Progress in these areas is essential if we are to achieve Healthy People 2010 goals of increasing quality and years of healthy life and eliminating health disparities, and American Cancer Society goals of reducing cancer incidence and mortality…
